2005 Places I've Been!
CHICAGO - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will present “ Resource Alignment Begins with Collection Development: A Hands-On Approach, ” a preconference workshop during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. This preconference, presented by Karen R. Lowe of the Northwest Regional Education Service Alliance, will be held on Friday, June 24, 2005, 1 – 4 pm. This hands-on, working session is designed to demonstrate a step-by-step procedure for analyzing, weeding, and building the school library media collection, utilizing guidelines set by the state curriculum. Participants will learn to identify resources that will aid in elimination of unusable materials, as well as isolate weaknesses in curriculum support and prioritize gaps based on areas of most critical need. The session will provide strategies for developing a five-year resource development plan, including preparation of a five-year budget proposal to obtain needed resources. Karen R. Lowe, current president of the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), is an education consultant at the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance in Wilkesboro, N.C., and also does workshops and presentations throughout the United States. She also teaches graduate courses in library science at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Lowe has published a book on resource alignment, as well as articles in Knowledge Quest, North Carolina Libraries and Leading and Learning with Technology. To register for the “Resource Alignment” preconference, go to the ALA Annual Conference Web site www.ala.org/annual. Tickets are $79 for AASL members; $119 for ALA members; and $169 for non-members. To find out more information about other AASL programs and events at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this June, go to www.ala.org/aasl/annual.
